In short: Booxne has no account, no ads, no analytics and no server of its own. Your library stays on your iPhone and in your private iCloud. Nobody else can read it, not even me.
1. Who is responsible
The Booxne app and the booxne.com website are published by Alessio Munzi (By Alessio), a private individual based in Charleroi, Belgium. For any question about your data, write to contact@booxne.com.
This policy applies to the Booxne app for iPhone, version 2.0 and later, and to the booxne.com website.
2. What the app stores, and where
Everything you create in Booxne stays under your control:
- Your library: books, statuses, pages, reading sessions, ratings, reviews, notes, quotes and your yearly goal.
- Your profile: the first name you choose and the color of your avatar. There is no profile photo.
- Your settings: reminder time and app preferences, kept on your iPhone only.
This data is stored on your iPhone. If iCloud is turned on, it is also synced to your private iCloud account through Apple's CloudKit service, so your books can follow you to another iPhone. This private database belongs to your Apple Account: I cannot access it, read it or delete it. Apple's privacy policy applies to iCloud.
Booxne has no account system and no server of its own. I never receive a copy of your library.
3. Book search and covers
When you search for a book, scan a barcode or browse a genre, the app sends your search words or the ISBN directly to Open Library, a free catalog run by the Internet Archive, a non-profit organization based in the United States. Book information and covers are loaded from Open Library. Like any website, Open Library receives your IP address and the request itself. Booxne sends nothing else and does not keep your searches. See the Internet Archive terms and privacy policy.
4. Camera
The camera is used only when you scan an ISBN barcode. The image is analyzed live on your iPhone. No photo is taken, saved or sent.
5. Reminders
Reading reminders are local notifications scheduled by your iPhone. No push service is used and nothing is sent to a server.
6. Purchases
Booxne Pro is sold by Apple through the App Store. Apple handles the payment. The app only checks, on your iPhone, Apple's confirmation that your Apple Account owns Booxne Pro. I never see your name, your Apple Account or your payment details.
7. Analytics and crash reports
The app contains no analytics, advertising or tracking tool and does not use Apple's advertising identifier. If you have chosen to share analytics with app developers in your iPhone settings, Apple may send me anonymous crash reports and usage figures. You can change this at any time in Settings, Privacy & Security, Analytics & Improvements.
8. The booxne.com website
The website uses no cookies, no analytics and no advertising. Its fonts are hosted on the site itself, so no request is made to Google or to another font service. When you choose a language, this choice is remembered in your browser's local storage (key "booxne-lang") and never leaves your device.
The site is hosted by Hostinger (see the legal notice). Like any host, Hostinger keeps technical server logs (IP address, date and time, page requested, browser) for a limited period, for security and to keep the service running.
If you write to me by email, I use your address and your message only to reply to you.
9. Legal bases
Under the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR), the processing described here relies on the performance of the terms of use (providing the app and its features), on legitimate interest (security of the website) and on your own request (answering your emails). There is no profiling and no automated decision.
10. How long data is kept
Your library stays on your iPhone and in your iCloud until you delete it. Deleting a book in the app deletes it on all your devices. To delete everything, delete the app, then open Settings, your name, iCloud, and remove Booxne's data from your iCloud storage.
Emails are kept for as long as needed to follow up on your request.
11. Your rights
You can view, correct and delete your data yourself in the app at any time. With Booxne Pro you can also export your whole library to CSV and JSON. For any other request (access, rectification, erasure, restriction, objection or portability), write to contact@booxne.com.
You also have the right to lodge a complaint with the Belgian Data Protection Authority (Autorité de protection des données, Rue de la Presse 35, 1000 Brussels, dataprotectionauthority.be) or with the authority of the country where you live.
12. Children
Booxne can be used by readers of all ages. Since it collects no personal data on any server, it does not collect data from children either.
13. Changes
If this policy changes, the new version is published on this page with a new date. Important changes are also mentioned in the app's update notes.
